Individual Therapy and Approach
I am a registered Clinical Psychologist with the Psychologists Board of Australia and a member of the Australian Psychological Society. I am also a registered Medicare provider and a registered provider with most health insurance funds. I assist adults with a range of concerns, such as depression, anxiety, and adjustment problems (see list below and note at bottom of page). I also work with adults wishing to enhance well-being and satisfaction, build resilience, or develop personal strengths.

- Adjusting to new life circumstances

What does therapy involve?
Therapy aims to assist people to develop an understanding of the underlying causes of their difficulties and emotional distress and effect lasting change by developing new skills and approaches to their problems so they can live happier and more productive lives. In psychotherapy, psychologists apply scientifically validated procedures to help people develop healthier, more effective habits to reduce symptoms, improve mood, and tackle the problems they face with enhanced skills and knowledge (American Psychological Association). Therapy commences with an assessment process to gather information about the nature of the issue the client wishes to work on so specific goals can be developed.
More specifically, the psychotherapy process is a collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and therapist. It provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who is objective, neutral and nonjudgmental. The aim is to work together to identify and change the thought and behavior patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best or achieving specific goals, and then develop a plan on how best to move forward. A therapy session is typically about 50 minutes in duration, and can occur on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis as negotiated with you and depending on your needs. The length of therapy very much depends on type of goals and complexity of the issue being addressed. For example, the number of sessions may vary from several sessions over a few months, to 10 or more sessions over several months, or ongoing sessions over a year or more. I regularly review and discuss with the client progress towards goals and the estimated number of sessions that may be required.
The theoretical underpinnings of the approach I apply with clients will vary depending on the situation and needs of the individual, and a formulation of the issue to be addressed. For over 10 years I have been utilising mindfulness-based approaches and their application to depression, anxiety, worry, and rumination. I am also trained and experienced in cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), meta-cognitive therapy (MCT), schema and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR ) therapies. My aim is to tailor my approach and the various therapy modalities to suit the client’s preferences, situation, needs and goals based on a shared understanding of the issue to be addressed.
